Homelessness in the United States has reached historic levels across nearly all populations — including those experiencing unsheltered homelessness. As of 2024, more than 152,000 people live in chronic homelessness — one in three of the total homeless population, and a 27% increase over the past 17 years.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development defines “unsheltered homeless” as individuals whose primary nighttime location is a public or private place not meant for sleeping — including tents, sidewalks, vehicles, and encampments. Despite increased shelter capacity and record-level funding, the crisis continues to escalate.
