SUMMARY:The Chalmers Center: How to Build Developmental Classes that Actually Work
DESCRIPTION:[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ da_disable_devices=”off|off|off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″ da_is_popup=”off” da_exit_intent=”off” da_has_close=”on” da_alt_close=”off” da_dark_close=”off” da_not_modal=”on” da_is_singular=”off” da_with_loader=”off” da_has_shadow=”on”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”] \nWhile many adults learn best through informal interaction\, word of mouth\, and trial-and-error\, many attempts at life skills classes for our low-income neighbors are done in formally-structured settings that can feel intimidating or even disconnected from their reality. \nJoin True Charity and The Chalmers Center\, the organization behind the popular book When Helping Hurts\, as we explore why just providing good information isn’t enough in our poverty-alleviation efforts. We will discuss some best practices of adult education to help you evaluate your current class offerings and/or consider how you may add new ones that connect better with your intended learners. \nJerilyn Sanders serves as Senior Director of US Programs at the Chalmers Center: Jerilyn has a B.A. in Psychology from Biola University and an Ed.M. from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has worked in a variety of educational and youth development programs in the U.S.\, with an emphasis on urban communities. Her position at Chalmers synthesizes several things: love for people\, passion for training that empowers disenfranchised people\, and a desire to see God’s church be all that He meant it to be. Jerilyn lives in the Chattanooga\, TN area\, with her husband and two teenagers. \nMatt Seadore architects structures and processes that support the vision and mission of the local church. He leads change\, builds culture\, and develops metrics to measure organizational health. Matt holds a master’s degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Global Leadership with an emphasis in international development. He also serves as a contract consultant for The Chalmers Center and Focused Community Strategies in Atlanta\, and projects he has initiated and led have been featured in works by leading thinkers and authors in the field of development including Brian Fikkert\, Amy Sherman\, and Bob Lupton. Matt currently resides in Kennewick\, Washington where he serves as Executive Pastor at The Living Room Community Church. \n[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_NmfwH6xfSKGWM-esTwyRig” button_text=”Register now” button_alignment=”center” admin_label=”Button” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”25px” button_bg_color=”#002336″ button_border_width=”8px” background_layout=”dark” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

We’ll gather together for an intensive dive into the principles and practice of effective charity.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: November 2\, 2022\nTime: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.\nLocation: Immanuel Church; 325 104th Ave.\, Holland\, MI 49423\nCost: $20 – includes lunch and materials\n\n\n\n\n\nBased on the 7 Marks of Effective Compassion as outlined in Dr. Marvin Olasky’s groundbreaking book The Tragedy of American Compassion\, this event will couple dynamic presentations with opportunities for deep discussion and collaboration amongst attendees. Join us for this refreshing opportunity to explore principles of relational\, responsible charity and to strategize with other vested community members to truly move the poverty needle in the Holland area.\nHere’s a glimpse of the day’s content: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAffiliation – Who is most responsible to help a person in need? We’ll discuss this tricky question and learn the critical importance of restoring key relationships in a person’s life as they journey toward self-sufficiency.\nBonding – What is the role of relationship between charity staff/volunteers and the person in need? We’ll discuss the importance of strong social networks and give practical guidance for establishing these game-changing relationships.\nCategorization – Well-executed charity operates from the understanding that different situations call for different charitable responses\, and that one-size-fits-all approaches are rarely the solution. We’ll share about different categories of need and corresponding appropriate charitable responses.\nDiscernment – You’ve heard the quote “knowledge is power.” Charity is no exception! We’ll explore how prudent action\, rooted in accurate information brought about by observation\, investigation\, and communication\, is essential to effective charity\, and explore tools that can help us do just that.\nExchange – The duty to honor a person’s dignity and capacity is as delicate as it is vital. Learn how an “earn-it” model of charity can awaken a person’s sense of self-worth and set them on a path toward flourishing\, and see the ways different charities have put this into practice.\nFreedom – Can charity be enslaving? Yes\, for both the helper and the helped– misguided charity can produce paternalism for the former and dependence for the latter. Together\, we’ll reimagine how charity can preserve a person’s vital freedom rather than diminish it.\nGod – We’ll dive into the research demonstrating the crucial difference that faith makes in a person’s journey out of poverty\, on the part of both the helper and the helped.\n\n\n\n\n\n[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]\n \n \n \n [/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

In theory\, that common vision is a uniting force. In practice\, however\, division runs rampant between organizations with similar goals. If left unchecked\, pride and greed can crowd out the humility and generosity necessary for effective collaboration across organizational lines. How can we combat division in order to see more success in our common mission? \nJoin the True Charity Initiative and Peter Greer\, President and CEO of Hope International\, for an exploration of unifying principles as outlined in his book Rooting for Rivals. We’ll not only learn why collaboration is necessary for advancement\, but how it can be done in a way where everyone wins. \nPeter Greer is the president and CEO of HOPE International\, a global Christ-centered economic development organization serving throughout Africa\, Asia\, Latin America\, and Eastern Europe. As an advocate for the Church’s role in missions and alleviating extreme poverty\, Peter has co-authored 15 books\, including Rooting for Rivals (selected as a 2019 Leadership Resource of the Year in Outreach magazine)\, Mission Drift (selected as a 2015 Book Award Winner from Christianity Today)\, and The Spiritual Danger of Doing Good (selected as one of the top 40 books on poverty by WORLD magazine). \n[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UrXp3TXeSt-_I-Y9nnxyGQ” button_text=”Register now” button_alignment=”center” admin_label=”Button” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”25px” button_bg_color=”#002336″ button_border_width=”8px” background_layout=”dark” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Why? Because they knew that the real vehicle for transformation of circumstances was through relationship. \nSo often\, though\, our poverty alleviation strategies sure look a lot like tongs: with the best of intentions\, we load people up with food or clothing and send them on our way. But perhaps the real act of mercy more often looks like a willingness to walk alongside the person in poverty on his path and help find the way to smoother trails. But what does it look like to “walk alongside” someone in poverty? Where does one even begin? \nJoin the True Charity Initiative on Tuesday\, August 9th 12-1 pm CST for a panel discussion featuring nonprofit leaders who prioritize relationship-building and have built successful mentoring programs. They’ll share how to get a mentoring program started\, best practices for creating real relationships\, and “lessons learned” along the way. \n  \n[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_jWxvr-E8S6Glfe7yLnXzFQ” button_text=”Register now” button_alignment=”center” admin_label=”Button” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”25px” button_bg_color=”#002336″ background_layout=”dark” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” button_border_width=”8px” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Indeed\, research has shown that the poor tend to be disconnected from family\, friends\, neighbors\, and community\, wreaking havoc on their health and stability and hindering their path out of poverty. This suggests that perhaps the foremost act of charity should be kindling a connection with those in need– but many are hesitant. How do you break the ice? How do you balance encouragement and confrontation? What if there are difficult root issues at play? \nJoin the True Charity Initiative for in-depth training on mentorship across two evenings – Sunday July 17 and Sunday July 24th from 10:45 -11:45 am\, hosted by Christ’s Church of Oronogo. We’ll equip attendees with practical tips and tools that can help you confidently develop real relationships with those in need. If you understand the value of embedding those in need in a loving community but struggle to know how to take the first step\, this training is for you! \nYou will learn: \n\nFeatures of a healthy mentoring relationship\nThe importance of promoting self-sufficiency\nTechniques for evaluating and goal-setting\nTips for navigating tricky areas such as confrontation\n\nThere is no required fee for this training but we appreciate you registering below so we know how many workbooks to supply. A small donation at the door is encouraged for your materials. \n  \n[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

This tool empowers your organization with information recorded in real time about how your client has been previously assisted.\nHere’s a glimpse of the day’s content: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAffiliation – Who is most responsible to help a person in need?

Even if you’re not familiar with this phrase\, you’ve doubtless felt it: it’s the constant pull felt by the mountain of small tasks and unending checklists. And\, if left unchecked\, the urgent things can cause well-meaning nonprofit and church leaders to neglect mission-critical components such as vision\, strategy\, and program/process improvement. \nBut well-structured\, effective programs require intentional checks “under the hood”– what’s working? What’s not? How can you tell? Measurement of long-term results such as employment\, education\, stable housing\, and family reunifications can guide this important process– but where does one even begin in measuring progress in those key areas? \nJoin the True Charity Initiative and Better Together on June 14th from 12-1 pm CST for a candid discussion on outcomes measurement. Megan Rose\, CEO of Better Together\, will present on this important topic\, using her own experience and “lessons learned” from  measuring outcomes at Better Together. If you’re part of a poverty-fighting charity or nonprofit\, make sure to join us for lively discussion on how to effectively measure impact! \n  \n[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_EW348cpGSG2nrF3MZobFKw” button_text=”Register now” button_alignment=”center” _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”25px” button_bg_color=”#002336″ background_layout=”dark” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

From our intricate bodily systems\, to our nuanced emotions\, to our precise likes and dislikes and unique personality traits\, humans are a profound display of detailed complexity. But why does that matter? How can we harness the varying personalities\, capacities\, and talents of people to foster a flourishing society? \nJoin the True Charity Initiative Thursday\, June 9th from 12-1:30 pm for a Lunch and Learn on Christian anthropology. We’ll discuss a biblical view of the unique characteristics and roles of the human person and explore how that ultimately informs our views about everything else\, from economics to government to charity. We’ll have compelling discussion on how our charity work can reflect the dignified nature of the human person. Suggested donation for lunch is $5. SUMMARY:Mentorship Training: A Guide to Walking with the Poor (2 evening sessions)

\nJoin the True Charity Initiative for in-depth training on mentorship across two evenings – Monday\, February 28th and Monday March 7th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. \n  \n[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.14.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]\n \n \n \n [/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

SUMMARY:The Trauma-Informed Poverty Fighter: A Webinar with Dave Lockridge
DESCRIPTION:[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Section” _builder_version=”3.22″][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”] \nThose on the frontlines of poverty alleviation are well-acquainted with the counter-productive\, harmful\, and even bizarre behavior that so often accompanies poverty: stunted emotional development\, lack of self-control\, irrational or risky behavior\, and a propensity for numbing agents such as drugs or alcohol are common issues. \nThe persistence and severity of these problems can be a head scratcher and a headache for poverty fighters. But untangling these deep-seated issues doesn’t have to be a mystery: as it turns out\, there is rhyme and reason behind many of these harmful habits and hang-ups. Trauma\, if left unaddressed\, wreaks havoc on the mind and heart of the person who experienced it\, leaving mental and emotional scars that often manifest themselves as dysfunctional behavior. More frightening still is the tendency of those who have experienced trauma to perpetuate it: using and abusing others\, just as they have been used and abused. \nIs there hope for those who have experienced life’s worst atrocities? Can we help put a stop to the perpetuation of trauma? Is there a way to sensitively and intelligently respond to troubling behaviors? At True Charity\, we give a resounding “yes!” to these questions and invite you to join us for an exploration of the impact and healing of trauma. \nJoin True Charity Initiative for a webinar featuring Dave Lockridge\, Founder and CEO of ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Overcomers. Dave is a recognized leader in the trauma-informed movement both nationally and internationally who takes a scientific yet sensitive approach to issues of trauma. This introductory webinar is perfect for those who need a basic understanding of and strategy for addressing trauma. \nAfter the presentation\, there will be an opportunity to engage Dave for a time of Q&A. True Charity Network members will receive exclusive on-demand access to the recording of the webinar. You can learn more and sign up for the True Charity Network here. \n[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_R5MR2S74RYWKhYlLu2-AlA” button_text=”Register for the Webinar” _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” sticky_enabled=”0″ button_bg_color=”#E09900″ button_bg_enable_color=”on” button_alignment=”center”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

SUMMARY:Mentorship Training: A Guide to Walking with the Poor
DESCRIPTION:For those living in chronic poverty\, the root need is not for material things– rather\, so often the root need is for relationships. \nJoin the True Charity Initiative for an in-depth training on mentorship Saturday\, November 20th from 1-4 pm. We’ll equip attendees with practical tips and tools that can help you confidently develop real relationships with those in need. If you understand the value of embedding those in need in a loving community but struggle to know how to take the first step\, this training is for you! \nThere is a suggested donation of $10 at the door to cover the cost of your workbook.

Furthermore\, scripture is clear that spirit-filled Christians have a duty to care for the poor\, marginalized\, and disenfranchised. For the modern-day church\, these instructions can be simultaneously inspiring and intimidating: How do we carry out this incredible responsibility in an impactful\, meaningful way? What does it look like practically in the day-to-day for the Church to engage the broken? How can we inspire our fellow congregants to get outside the four walls of the church to meet with those who are hurting? \nJoin True Charity Initiative for a webinar featuring Rick Rusaw\, co-author of the popular book The Externally Focused Church\, for an exploration of the Church’s unique role in community development and poverty alleviation efforts. Rick will draw on his years of experience as a pastor of a Colorado church to discuss how your congregation can shift from internally-focused activity to externally-focused impact. You can expect the following: \n\nTips for meaningful collaboration between the church and other resources in the community\nStrategies for welcoming and building healthy relationships with isolated community members\nIdeas for shifting church benevolence from repetitive handout charity to developmental\, relational charity\n\nAfter the presentation\, there will be an opportunity to engage Rick for a time of Q&A. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Mentorship-- Flourishing through Friendship (Part II)
DESCRIPTION:For those living in chronic poverty\, the root need is not for material things– rather\, so often the root need is for relationships. Indeed\, research has shown that low-income people tend to be disconnected from family\, friends\, neighbors\, and community\, wreaking havoc on their health and stability. This suggests that perhaps the foremost act of charity should be the giving of our time and our love to those starved of relationship– but where do we start? \nJoin True Charity Initiative for Lunch and Learn on June 17th from 12-1:30 pm in the upstairs Willard Learning Center at Watered Gardens Outreach Center. We’ll continue our journey exploring the good of mentorship in delivering lasting hope and opportunity to the poor. During part 1 of this lesson\, we reviewed foundational concepts and terms. Now\, we’ll practically apply the foundational concepts by exploring tools and tips that can help kindle authentic\, transformational relationships through mentoring! No worries if you missed part 1– there will still be plenty to glean regardless if you missed that lesson! \nLunch is provided; there is a suggested donation of $5 at the door. Seating is limited\, so reserve your spot today!

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn-- Handouts in Haiti: The Unintended Consequences of Perpetual Relief in Haiti and at Home
DESCRIPTION:If you are reading this\, there is a good chance that you are outrageously wealthier than an average Haitian man or woman. He is sitting right now on a pile of large rocks in the hot sun\, chipping them into smaller rocks with the hope to sell them as gravel. She is carrying 40 pounds of water on her head on a mile-long trek from a muddy creek to a muddy hovel. Clearly\, these poor folks need a little assistance\, but what kind? Should we just buy them some food and a water purifier? Will that change their situation? Will anything? \nJoin us for Lunch and Learn as we engage with a recent practitioner of charity in one of the poorest countries in the world. After studying economics and serving as an Army officer\, True Charity’s own Membership Director Nathan Mayo and his wife lived and worked in rural Haiti from 2018 to 2020. Nathan combines his economic perspective with firsthand experience to explore the unintended consequences of one-way giving andconsider better alternatives. \nWe’ll consider the following questions: \n\nIs perpetual relief justified in extreme poverty situations?\nHow do principles like challenge and self-sufficiency translate to places where desperate need is a routine occurrence?\nHow can individuals and organizations practice effective charity across large cultural divides?\nWhat can we learn about charity in the US from the lessons of developing countries?\n\nJoin us Friday\, March 26th in the upstairs Willard Learning Center at Watered Gardens in Joplin\, MO for Lunch and Learn. Suggested donation for lunch is $5. Seating is limited\, so reserve your spot today!
